so, just to clarify the point....
this blog is largely a timeline for the following page:
http://dghjdfsghkrdghdgja.appspot.com/categories/music/index/index.html
...which is going to need to be drastically updated as i run through the actual reviews.
that page is not meant to be a current review site like pitchfork or drowned in sound. rather, it is meant to be a historical review site, more like allmusic. that's not even what i'm aiming for, though - i'm aiming for something more like christgau. it's not supposed to be a place where people go to get information about this year's hip new music trends, but rather a place where people go to sort through substantive music over the ages. and, yes, i'm comically behind on it at this point.
i previously had a five year moratorium on reviews, which was designed to help me catch up, as well as to help me put ideas into context. as it is now 2019, that would mean that records released up to this point in 2014 would be eligible for review. but, i don't want to be actually posting reviews for media in the existing reality at this point, partly because it would really slow me down. i want to get back to my own music...
the historical reviews are useful to note as influences, and what i choose to review, and where i choose to review it, will be determined primarily by the desire to list influences. this is less of a concern for the more recent recordings. and, at this point, i haven't been paying much attention to new releases for several years - i'm in a "tuned out" phase, which is periodic and normal for me. when i tune back in, i'm going to be looking for obscure music, as i usually do.
i'm consequently extending my moratorium to 20 years. but, the 20 year rule is actually only going to apply to the alter-reality; more broadly speaking, i only want to be reviewing material by dead artists, or defunct bands. this will allow me to digest entire discographies at once, which will be necessary when i address some of the more obscure material in the list.
so, i'm currently listening to this stuff from mid 2013, and i'm going to take note of it, but i'm not going to actually write official cross-linked reviews for any of it at this time - that will need to wait until the bands in question break-up.
what to expect here is then as follows:
- for releases before mid-1993 and since mid-2013, this page will archive youtube discussions, identify release dates and house cursory or first impression type reviews.
- for releases between 1993-2013, this page will systematically/chronologically explore releases that were influential to me and write official reviews to be cross-referenced at the appspot site.
the scope of the page will expand as i work through the discography.
but, i have to keep reminding everybody that what i'm doing right now is writing liner notes for the period one and two releases, and that i want to catch up to the alter-reality and get back to the discgraphy.
