i will eventually make use of the timeline feature in blogger to post reviews of cds to the dates in the timeline that the cds were released. for now, i'm creating a second list that contains the chronology. i like to hardcode my html in general so that it doesn't break ten years after you die; i don't like using programming approaches that have short shelf lives and are doomed to obsolescence. it's just a different perspective.

| 1910 | 09-06 | ralph vaughn williams |
london, england |
fantasia on a theme by thomas tallis (performance) |
three choirs festival |
- | ~15:00 | 0 | the fantasia was first performed in a church in england in 1910, conducted by vaughn williams himself. it was not written out entirely until 1919 and not published via goodwin and tabb until 1921. the theme by tallis that it is based on is dated to 1567. |
| 1918 | 09-29 | gustav holst |
london, england |
the planets (performance) (opus #32) |
private | -- | ~51 | 1 | the supposed first performance of the planets in 1918, before armistice day, was before a small private audience. that strikes me as a likely myth, a prori. supposedly conducted by adrian boult. there were certainly performances after the armistice, in 1919 and 1920. |
| 1921 | ?? | gustav holst |
london, england |
the planets (score) (opus #32) |
goodwin and tabb |
-- | ~51 | 1 | the symphony may have been performed first in 1918, 1919 or 1920, but it was not published until 1921 via goodwin and tabb. the correct publishing date is 1921. |

| 1930 | ?? | claude debussy |
paris, ile-de-france |
nocturnes 1. nuages 2. fetes 3. sirenes (score) (revised) (L98) |
j. jobert | - | ~27 | 0 | debussy's three nocturnes were first published in 1900 and partially performed the same year. they were first performed together as a full piece in 1901. debussy died in 1918, but supposed corrections to the score made by debussy when he was still alive were posthumously published in 1930 and the revised version is accepted by almost everybody and is almost always performed, so it is the version in almost all recordings. |
| 1934 | ?? | ralph vaughn williams and ralph greaves |
london, england |
fantasia on greensleeves (score) |
oxford university press |
- | ~4:45 | 2 | the adaptation of greeensleves by vaughn williams dated to 1928 was rearranged and published by greaves in 1934 via oxford university press. |
| 1938 | ?? | claude debussy |
france (paris, ile-de-france) |
la mer (score) (L111) |
durand et cie | - | ~24:00 | 0 | la mer was first premiered and published in 1905, re-premiered with changes in 1908 and then republished with those changes in 1909. debussy continued to make updates to the score until he died in 1918 and these were published posthumously by the same firm in 1938. these changes are also not universally accepted, so the situation has long been that all three versions have continued to be performed, along with hybrid versions that combine elements of the three published versions. exactly what version of the score is being performed at any given time is generally not indicated by the conductors. |
| 1964 | ?? | claude debussy |
paris, ile-de-france |
nocturnes 1. nuages 2. fetes 3. sirenes (score) (revised) (L98) |
j. jobert | - | ~27 | 0 | debussy's three nocturnes were first published in 1900 and partially performed the same year. they were first performed together as a full piece in 1901. debussy died in 1918, but supposed corrections to the score made by debussy when he was still alive were posthumously published in 1930 and the revised version is accepted by almost everybody and is almost always performed, so it is the version in almost all recordings. the 1930 version was apparently still full of errors and was republished with further correctons in 1964, but almost everybody uses the 1930 version, still. |

74321 17905 |
71:00 | 1 | this is a 1994 canadian digital pressing of a 1976 analog rca release that is expanded into a split cd between holst and vaughn williams that has about 20 minutes of fantasia at the end and contains transferred analog recordings of eugene ormandy conducting the philadelphia orchestra made from 1970-1975. is marketed as english music, so also contains a jewish female choir name dropping mendelssohn, and yes you're supposed to get the joke. you can't have english music night at the old mason lodge without mendelssohn. c'mon. you fucking uncultured yankee. |
