you know, there was so much great abstract industrial music released in the 80s and 90s. it's kind of disappointing that all these emo bands just want to sound the same and ultimately be marilyn manson, who was really the least creative or interesting of the bunch...
i don't really listen to much categorized any of these ways, and i generally have difficulty determining what the differences between "emo" and "metal" are (besides being marketed to different age groups), but this really sounds exactly like every emo song ever written, and they all sound like manson (who i thought of at the time as metal but today realize is the dominant influence over what's called emo).
but if i understand what you're saying it's that they initially called this metal, then called it emo, now call it metal again?

"Emo" is not a genre of music.. Nor has it even been. It's a style people would call themselves in the 80's. It's been passed down so many times through the years and the meaning has been completely blown out of proportion as in people "cutting themselves" and writing "emo music". Wtf is an "emo song".. ? Plus this sounds nothing like Manson.

yeah, that's an often regurgitated statement, but it's not true. emo (in the metal sense, as opposed to the other senses) became a genre of music in the late 90s by way of mainstream media needing a way to remarket hair metal to gen y and distinguish it from "alternative rock". that being said, i would generally prefer to refer to this as "metal" as it's a more general term, but the precise combination of vocal melodies and guitar work demonstrated in this song has been consolidated into the package that the market sells as "emo". i suppose this goes directly through something like paramore on it's way back to manson as a source.
and, yes, this would have fit splendidly on antichrist superstar.
there was a band in the 90s called curve that was maybe a little closer to this overall, but i think it would be an error to identify them as being influential. it's manson that's to blame for this.

Manson is not Emo. Emo is groups like My chemical romance and AFI.

manson is the primary archetype/formula that produced those types of bands.
there were a number of (poorly regarded, and now slightly obscure) bands in the 90s like stabbing westward that acted as a kind of a bridge, but manson is the ultimate purveyor of evil when it comes to what is called "emo".
